Frequently Asked Questions

Everything you need to know about managing, sharing and updating race routes with SummitGPX.

What is SummitGPX?

SummitGPX is a professional route hosting and visualization platform for race organizers, event directors and outdoor brands. It helps you upload, manage, update and share GPX routes without repeatedly sending files to participants.

Who is SummitGPX for?

SummitGPX is built for races, endurance events, expeditions, charities and outdoor organizations that need a simple way to publish accurate route information for participants.

How long does it take to set up a route?

Most routes can be uploaded and published in just a few minutes. Upload your GPX file, customize the route page and start sharing it right away.

What happens if I need to change my route after I've shared it?

Simply upload a new version of the route. Existing links, embedded maps and QR codes continue to work and automatically show the latest route version. Replace route files and send route-update emails with Starter or Pro. Route editing, reversal and version history require Pro.

Do I need to send runners a new GPX file every time the route changes?

Share the same route page after an update. Runners who already downloaded the file must download the latest version and sync it to their device again; saved watch files do not update automatically.

Can I keep previous versions of a route?

Yes. Route version control lets you keep previous versions, add update notes and restore an earlier route if you need to. Replace route files and send route-update emails with Starter or Pro. Route editing, reversal and version history require Pro.

Can I embed routes on my website?

Yes. You can embed interactive route maps directly into your event website. When you update the route in SummitGPX, the embedded version updates too. Public route pages and elevation profiles are included on every plan. Playback is included with Starter and Pro; website embeds and custom branding require Pro.

Can I share routes without embedding them?

Yes. Every route can have its own shareable link, making it easy to use in emails, race instructions, social posts and event pages.

If I print QR codes on race packs, what happens if the route changes later?

Nothing needs replacing. The QR code stays the same and continues to point to the latest version of the route, even if the route changes multiple times.

Will my QR codes still work if I update the route?

Yes. Route QR codes always point to the route page, not a specific version of the route. This means you can update the route as many times as needed and the same QR code will continue to work without needing to be reprinted or redistributed.

Where can I use route QR codes?

QR codes can be used on race packs, start line signage, checkpoint boards, printed guides, websites, social media and registration materials.

Can I add checkpoints and aid stations?

Yes. You can add checkpoints, aid stations, cut off times, notes and other useful route markers to help runners understand the route before event day. Starter and Pro include checkpoint management, checkpoint-enabled downloads, route PDFs and checkpoint CSV exports. Free provides basic checkpoint display.

Are checkpoints shown on the elevation profile?

Yes. Checkpoints can appear on the interactive elevation profile, helping runners see where key points sit across the course.

Can runners download GPX files?

Yes. Runners can download GPX files directly from the route page, giving them the latest version of the route for use on compatible watches, GPS devices and navigation apps.

What other route file formats are supported?

SummitGPX also supports KML, TCX and FIT downloads, making routes easier to use across different mapping tools, GPS devices and apps. GPX downloads are included on every plan. Starter adds KML, TCX and checkpoint exports, including PDF and CSV; Pro adds FIT and split GPX downloads.

Can checkpoints be included in GPX downloads?

Yes. Checkpoints can be included in GPX exports, making files more useful for runners using compatible navigation devices and apps. Starter and Pro include checkpoint management, checkpoint-enabled downloads, route PDFs and checkpoint CSV exports. Free provides basic checkpoint display.

Does SummitGPX support route playback?

Yes. Route playback lets participants preview the route using the map and elevation profile, giving them a clearer feel for the course before they arrive. Public route pages and elevation profiles are included on every plan. Playback is included with Starter and Pro; website embeds and custom branding require Pro.

Can I customize the route page with my own branding?

Yes. You can add your logo, colors and styling so public route pages feel like part of your own event brand. Public route pages and elevation profiles are included on every plan. Playback is included with Starter and Pro; website embeds and custom branding require Pro.

Do runners need a SummitGPX account?

No. Runners can view shared routes without creating a SummitGPX account.

Does SummitGPX work on mobile?

Yes. Public route pages and embedded maps are designed to work across desktop, tablet and mobile devices.

Can I choose between miles and kilometres?

Yes. Routes can be viewed in miles and feet or kilometres and metres, depending on what works best for your event and participants.

Can I use SummitGPX for more than running races?

Yes. Although SummitGPX is ideal for trail races and ultras, it can also be used for cycling events, walks, expeditions and other outdoor routes.

Why use SummitGPX instead of sending GPX files by email?

Emailing GPX files can quickly lead to confusion when routes change. SummitGPX gives organizers a single route link, QR code and embedded map that always stay up to date, helping participants access the latest route information without needing files to be resent.

Can I try SummitGPX before paying?

New accounts receive 30 days of Pro features from activation. Afterwards, the selected plan’s features and limits apply. Paid subscriptions bill normally during the preview; it does not automatically upgrade your subscription.
